In this edition of Ask an Expert, we tackle a pressing issue facing many of our Members: sustainable ship recycling. As the maritime industry accelerates its push toward decarbonisation, new and stricter regulations, particularly around greenhouse gas emissions, are coming into force. This shift means that many older, less efficient vessels are now heading to recycling yards.

A major milestone in this space is the Hong Kong Convention, which is set to enter into force on 26th June 2025. However, despite this progress, there are still legal uncertainties surrounding regulatory compliance that need to be addressed.

To help us navigate this landscape, we’re joined by two leading voices in the field: Jim Heath and Robin Townsend, founding partners of MARPROF Environmental Ltd. Their insights will shed light on what the convention means in practice and how Members can prepare for what’s ahead.
