The widespread use of lithium-ion cells and batteries across multiple industries has led to a steady increase in shipments by sea, bringing greater attention to the associated risks.

In response, the Cargo Incident Notification System (CINS) has published its latest guidelines to support the safe carriage of lithium-ion cells and batteries in containers. The guidance complements existing regulatory frameworks such as the IMDG Code and highlights key risks, including fire, thermal runaway and the release of toxic gases.

Members with ships engaged in the carriage of dangerous goods in containers are encouraged to refer to the attached document for detailed guidance, which has been developed in collaboration with the International Group of P&I Clubs and the TT Club.
