The recent worldwide outbreak of Covid-19 (coronavirus) has affected the availability of crew and opportunity for crew changes within the global fleet. Travel restrictions and additional screening have compounded the issue.
The UK Club Crew Health team were recently asked to source support for seafarers
who had sadly witnessed the unexpected death of a fellow crewmember. Months
later, despite initial counselling, the crew was still experiencing flashbacks and
anxiety. They were suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
On 17 July 2019, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC).
Although a precise estimate of the global sepsis cases is difficult to ascertain, some scientific publications report that it affects more than 30 million people worldwide every year, potentially leading to six million deaths.
The Club reports a case of a crew member recently repatriated following a period of insomnia and heart palpitations.

The Crew Health Team at UK P&I Club, calls for greater crew education on hepatitis.
We are pleased to advise the UK P&I Club has been short listed for the SAFETY4SEA Initiative Award 2018.
Medical examination results obtained from the UK P&I Club PEME clinic network indicate 10.1% of crew unfitness is related to hepatitis, with 8.5% of the total crew found unfit due to Hepatitis B.
The Club has been alerted to a number of recent incidents involving crew at mooring stations, most of which have resulted in horrendous life-changing injuries, one was fatal.
Clinic visit - Croatia & Montenegro

Crew Health Director Sophia Bullard and UK Club auditor Mr David Thompson from Signum Services were recently in Croatia and Montenegro to visit medical facilities.
The UK Club is delighted to be working with Innovative Maritime Emotional Intelligence Center (I.M.E.Q), promoting mental health wellness and awareness at sea.
The UK Club has received the following update from South African correspondents, P&I Associates (Pty) Ltd, regarding South Africa's response to the Ebola outbreak in Democratic Republic of Congo.
Every year, the UK P&I Club supports several charities, usually with a maritime connection. In 2017/18, the Club is working with four charities, The Mission to Seafarers, the Sailors' Society, Mercy Ships and the International Maritime Rescue Federation.
