166 - 11/00 - Berthing Problems - Port Berbera - Somalia

Trulli
It has been brought to the Club's attention that the quayside at the Port of Berbera may not be adequately fendered. The berth - which is approached without tugs  -  appears to have no fendering. In a recent incident the pilot advised the master that the quayside was protected by fenders 1 meter wide located under the water (at high tide).

Whilst no damage occurred to the ship on this occasion, nor was any new damage caused to the quay, one hour before the ship sailed the Master was approached by the Port manager and accused of causing damage to it. This was refuted and note of protest made. No delay was encountered nor any claim pursued, but we would advise members to take great care when berthing at this port.
