Christopher has degrees in Economics from Tulane University and Law from the University of Wisconsin Law School; he has studied at the Institute of Maritime Law, Oslo. He has also served as Senior Editor of the Law Review. Christopher was Head of Claims at a Scandinavian marine insurer prior to joining Thomas Miller. From 2002-2007 he was based in Hong Kong to head the UK Club Managers’ operations in Asia-Pacific, working closely with members in the region. Currently Christopher is the UK Club’s CUO, a position he has held since 2010.
Bernt has a M.Sc. in Economics from Abo Akademi University, Turku. Bernt has worked in the insurance and offshore industry since 1996, in management and underwriting roles. In 2003 he joined a global marine contractor in Aberdeen as Global Risk Manager for all operations, establishing a captive in 2006. In 2008 Bernt joined a P&I Club for the establishment of an Offshore P&I team and in 2011 moved on to establish a Lloyd’s Syndicate for the P&I Club and becoming the Active Underwriter. Bernt is currently Managing Director for Thomas Miller Specialty Offshore.
Stuart, a Master Mariner, joined Thomas Miller’s Loss Prevention department in 2014. Prior to this he worked as casualty investigator for a leading shipping law firm and was at sea on a variety of different ship types including crude oil tankers, freight ferries, passenger ships and offshore drilling units, where he sailed as Barge Master.
Kevin qualified with a BA (Hons) is Business Studies from Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen. Furthering his qualifications Kevin has more than 15 years’ experience in the offshore and onshore oil and gas industry; working for various global marine contractors. In 2011 Kevin joined a P&I Club’s Offshore department to head up Risk Management and was involved in a wide range of pre and post incident work.
Dr WU Chao has a Ph.D in law from Paris University (Sorbonne). As Legal Director for UK P&I Club, she is responsible for giving general legal advice and analysing legal aspects of cover for members’ contractual arrangements. She also has overall responsibility for the legal aspects of P&I Club documentation and the Rules and Bye-Laws of the UK Club; as well as the legal aspects of the Pooling Agreement and of the UK Club’s reinsurance contracts. Chao is part of the Senior Management Team and represents the UK Club on various subcommittees and working groups of the International Group. Chao has been the chairperson of the IG Pooling Agreement Subcommittee since 2009.
James has an MA (Hons) from the University of St Andrews and had gained an Advanced Diploma in Ship Operations and Management from the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers. Prior to joining Thomas Miller in 2013, James was a P&I / FDD Underwriter for 11 years in the commercial market with a focus on European and Asian business. This followed two years in the London / Lloyd’s non-marine market. James previously held a senior underwriting role, dealing principally with business from Greece and Korea.
Peter Jones has a degree in Physics at the University of Bath and is a CII Chartered Insurer. Prior to joining Thomas Miller’s underwriting department in 2011, Peter was handling P&I claims, having previously worked as a Claims Adjuster in the non-marine market. He now supports the UK Club’s members in the Asia Pacific region, having previously supported members in Europe, Middle East and North America.
Jeff is a Master Mariner and holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Law from Nottingham University. Jeff joined Thomas Miller in December 2011 having spent 11 years working as a solicitor with a major London maritime law firm. As well as being a qualified solicitor, Jeff has 18 years seagoing experience on a wide range of ship types, predominantly oil and petrochemical tankers. He has been a Senior Claims Director since January 2013, but was appointed Global Technical Claims Director in 2017.
Kieron is a History BA (Hons) graduate from Sheffield University. He subsequently studied law at Christleton College of Law and qualified and worked as a solicitor with Clyde & Co. Thereafter he joined the Standard Club in 1996 in a claims capacity during which time he achieved a LLM (distinction) from Guildhall University. Kieron’s role at the Standard Club included extensive periods dealing with offshore claims, coverage and policy issues and wordings, latterly as that club’s Legal Director.
Alan has a degree in maritime business and law from Plymouth and 14 years’ experience at sea, to the rank of Chief Officer working on a wide variety of commercial ship types. He is a qualified solicitor with 23 years’ experience at an international law firm specialising in shipping, where he was latterly a partner. Alan has worked at Thomas Miller since 2011 as a Senior Claims Director. Alan has qualified as an ISM/ISO lead Auditor, as an ISPS Code company security officer and as an arbitrator and mediator with the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.
