19 - 10/97 - Steel Coils - Ex Klaipaeda (Lithuania)

Trulli

Further to

LP Bulletin 2 5/97

, a recent survey in Klaipaeda has found out that 6500 prime Cold rolled steel coils with packing apparently clean were soaking wet and heavily rusted inside. This cargo was bound for the USA. The value of the cargo was around 3$m. If the cargo had been shipped the possible claim against the ship could have been extremely large.

At the present time we understand there is about 20,000 mt of Cold rolled steel awaiting shipment in Klaipaeda.

Pre loading steel surveys are highly recommended in this port. For large shipments owners should consider flying a surveyor in.
