679 - 02/10 - Thefts in Durban - South Africa

The Association would like to inform Members about the rising number of thefts onboard vessels berthed at the Port of Durban despite implementation of additional security measures.

The thefts seem to be more prolific at Maydon Wharf where it is relatively easy to gain access to the berths. In a recent incident, thieves gained access to a vessel and were discovered in the accommodation, they had stolen cash and electrical equipment. One of the thieves attempted to escape by jumping into the bay whilst the other attempted to hide.
