Maritime Labour Convention 2006 Entry into Force in China

The People's Republic of China ratified the Maritime Labour Convention 2006 ("MLC") on 12 November 2015, which was the 68th State to ratify the Convention. The Convention came into force in China on 12 November 2016, one year after the ratification.

In September this year, the Chinese Ministry of Transport and Ministry of Human Resource and Social Security have jointly published a notice reminding relevant entities to get prepared for the Convention's implementation. A copy of the notice is attached in Chinese.

The Convention will apply to both ocean going and costal vessels flying Chinese flags. Port state control under the Convention will also be conducted by relevant Chinese authorities for vessels flying foreign flags.

From January 2017, the Amended MLC financial security requirements will also enter into force in China as well as in other MLC State parties. Members please refer to the Circular and FAQ published by the Club recently for more details
