280 - 01/03 - Increased tanker inspections - Australia

Trulli

We have been advised that following the recent sinking of the Prestige off the coast of Spain, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) will be increasing its inspections of all tankers. As from 12th December 2002, AMSA will be inspecting all tankers over 15 years of age and all single hulled tankers visiting Australian ports. AMSA will also closely be monitoring the operations of tankers in Australian waters and, if warranted, will further strengthen their Port State Control regime. They will continue to detain those ships identified at any Australian port with serious deficiencies that affect seaworthiness and the safety of crew, or pose a threat to the environment.
