804 - 01/12 - Nickel Ore Fatality - South China Sea

Trulli

Christmas Day 2011 saw the unfortunate and tragic loss of the VINALINES QUEEN a Supramax bulk ship carrying Nickel Ore from Indonesia to China.

After three losses in quick succession in late 2010 the industry made efforts to impress upon shippers, owners and intermediaries the importance of properly identifying the physical properties of Group A cargo prior to their being loaded and ensuring their safe carriage in accordance with the IMSBC Code. It is because of these efforts that this most recent loss has received such expressions of concern from all corners of the marine industry.

The Club considers that all members who carry this commodity regularly or are contemplating entering this market should continue to exercise caution prior to accepting such cargoes for shipment, especially cargoes originating from Indonesia and the Philippines, and to contact the Club if they have any specific concerns.

The Club has developed experience in the carriage of Group A cargoes and a consolidated list of relevant articles concerning Nickel Ore can be found.
