Shifting Sands - Illegal Sand Sales

Companies are taking advantage of sand dredging privileges authorised by the Vietnamese Government. At the end of 2009 the Vietnamese Government banned sand exports. In 2013 those regulations were loosened. The Government listed several enterprises allowed to export saline sand from river mouths and the sea, under certain conditions
It has been announced this week that as of May 2017 Philippines, Malaysia & Indonesia will launch joint piracy patrols in waters of the Sulu Sea.
Further to the Spanish Government passing the Stevedores Port Law reform last Friday, 24 FEB 17, the Club has learnt of the following strikes to be called by Spanish stevedores at all Spanish Ports.
Crew Health Programme

The Crew Health programme is the leading loss prevention initiative within the UK P&I Club. Clinics, which are approved under the programme, are held accountable to both the Club and Members for their performance.
The Club was recently involved in another case of kidnapping crew members in West Africa.

The Club has recently been informed that the Ice Campaign within the Azov Sea has come into force as of 3rd February 2017. Member's attention is to be drawn to the below advice from our local correspondent.
Dental problems are often a major cause for concern amongst seafarers. At the UK P&I Club, we often see claims arising from dental problems that require urgent medical treatment and even repatriation of crew.
At their meeting on 30th January 2017, the Directors reviewed the basis on which special war risks P&I cover could be made available to Members in accordance with the proviso to Rule 5E, and determined that this cover should be made available to Members for the 2017 policy year in accordance with the terms of the attached Directors' Resolution of 30th January 2017.
