Under the International Labour Organization’s Maritime Labour Convention (MLC), port states must ensure that seafarers on board ships in their territory who are in need of immediate medical care are given access to medical facilities on shore.

Club Update on Crew Medical Validity

The recent worldwide outbreak of Covid-19 (coronavirus) has affected the availability of crew and opportunity for crew changes within the global fleet. Travel restrictions and additional screening have compounded the issue.
The UK Club Crew Health team were recently asked to source support for seafarers
who had sadly witnessed the unexpected death of a fellow crewmember. Months
later, despite initial counselling, the crew was still experiencing flashbacks and
anxiety. They were suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
On 17 July 2019, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC).
Although a precise estimate of the global sepsis cases is difficult to ascertain, some scientific publications report that it affects more than 30 million people worldwide every year, potentially leading to six million deaths.
The Club reports a case of a crew member recently repatriated following a period of insomnia and heart palpitations.
